British Landing

This historic site is named the British Landing because of an event in 1812, when a small force of British regulars, several hundred voyageurs, and Indian allies landed and occupied a height that overlooked Fort Mackinac and demanded its surrender. Today, it’s a starting point for some great hiking trails that run through the state park.

Devil's Kitchen

Located on the southwestern shore of Mackinac Island, Devil’s Kitchen is a much-visited cave within Mackinac Island State Park. Local legend has it that Native Americans believed the cave was inhabited by evil cannibal spirits. To this day, the cave is still blackened with soot, allegedly from the spirits’ cooking fires.

Grand Hotel Bike Rentals

With over 70 miles of natural and paved trails, Mackinac Island is the perfect place to get outdoors. Bicycles are available for rent at Grand Hotel’s Pool House between 9:00 AM and 5:30 PM. Special Grand Hotel box luncheons are also available and can be enjoyed at any of the picnic spots throughout the Island.

A registered Michigan Historic Site, the Little Stone Church was built of local fieldstone in 1904. The 55- by 40-foot interior — featuring gleaming woodwork, and deep-set, colorful memorial windows — is virtually unchanged.

Skull Cave

Once a burial ground but now part of the Mackinac Island State Park, this small, shallow cave is believed to have been the hiding place for English fur trader Alexander Henry during Pontiac’s Rebellion in 1763.

Somewhere in Time Gazebo

Overlooking Haldimand Bay, Round Island, and Downtown Mackinac Island, the Gazebo can be found along Anne’s Tablet Trail. It gets its name from the famous movie, Somewhere in Time, as Universal Studios paid Mackinac State Historic Parks staff to construct the gazebo so it could be used as a prop in the movie.

Sugar Loaf Rock

The tallest limestone stack on Mackinac island, Sugar Loaf is a tower of rock that rises 75 feet out of the forest. Native American legend says that it is the dwelling of Gitchi Manitou, the Great Spirit.
