Dress Guide

At Grand Hotel, our tradition of elegance is part of what makes every visit special. We embrace our rich history, and our dress code reflects the timeless style that has been part of our story for generations.

During the day, we invite you to enjoy a relaxed resort atmosphere, where casual yet refined attire is welcome. Before 6:30 PM, we ask that guests refrain from wearing midriff-baring tops, sweatpants, cut-off shorts, sleeveless shirts, or attire with inappropriate language or graphics.

As evening falls, Grand Hotel transforms into a place of timeless sophistication, where every night is a special occasion. After 6:30 PM, we honor this 139-year tradition by requiring our guests to dress with elevated evening attire in all main areas of the hotel. While the hotel reserves the right to determine the appropriate and approved level of attire we require: Coordinated suits, dresses, skirts, blouses, dress sweaters, sport coat with necktie as examples of appropriate attire. No denim or shorts are permitted.

This tradition of dressing for the evening is a cherished part of the Grand Hotel experience, creating an atmosphere of grace and refinement for all to enjoy. Children 12 years and older are encouraged to embrace this tradition by dressing similarly to adults.
This policy applies to all parlor-level areas, including the Front Porch, Parlor, Geranium Bar, Baroque, Terrace Room, and Main Dining Room.

We appreciate your participation in this tradition, helping us honor the elegance and history that make Grand Hotel so unique.

Getting Here from the Boat Docks

Grand Hotel is a 15- to 20-minute walk from the boat docks. For your convenience, Grand Hotel operates horse-drawn carriages between the docks and Grand Hotel. As with all taxi services on Mackinac Island, there is a $9.00 per person fee, cash only, and seats are on a first-come, first-served basis. We cannot guarantee Grand Hotel carriages will meet all ferry boats, nor can we guarantee seats for all Grand Hotel guests.

Luggage

If you arrive by ferry, luggage transfer is simple and convenient. When you check in your luggage with the ferry service on the mainland, it will be tagged and delivered directly to your hotel room. Upon check-in, present your luggage tags at the front desk. If you are arriving close to 6:00 PM, you may want to bring your evening wear with you to the hotel as luggage transfer may take up to three hours to get to the hotel from the dock.

For your return trip back to the mainland, follow the in-room instructions. Your luggage will be tagged and transferred from your room to a secure location on the appropriate mainland dock. We request a minimum three-hour window for the transfer. Guests departing by ferry prior to 9:00 AM should transfer their own luggage to the dock.

Weather

Mackinac Island enjoys a mild spring, temperate summer, and crisp fall temperatures. Because the Island is located in the middle of the Straits of Mackinac, weather can be unpredictable. We recommend packing layers — and don’t forget your walking shoes.
