On a sprawling lawn surrounded by the lush surroundings of the Grand Hotel Tea Garden lies a spectacular setting for croquet and bocci ball. Both sports were popular in America when Grand Hotel opened in 1887. Today, they remain popular at family gatherings, garden parties and other social events.
We welcome you to enjoy these quintessential summer pastimes with family and friends. All equipment is provided free of charge throughout the day and is available on a first-come, first-served basis at the playing area, located next to the swimming pool.
Bocci is played with two teams of one, two or four players. The object of the game is to roll the bocci ball closer to the smaller target ball (pallino) than the opponent. See basic rules. Croquet can be played from two to six people. While there are many versions of the game, Backyard Croquet is the most popular variation in America. See how to play.
The lawn is also a great place for children to stretch their legs and spectators can sit on nearby benches to watch the friendly competition. Don’t forget to take photos next to the Tea Garden’s stone fountain and topiaries.
