Saturday morning begins with a fascinating journey through the history of Mackinac Island and Grand Hotel with Bob Tagatz, Grand Hotel’s Resident Historian. Then, take part in a special history presentation later in the afternoon. Plus, enjoy a welcome reception and breakfast and dinner daily.

Fall is a great time of year to experience the solitude of Mackinac Island and Grand Hotel. We hope to see you for this special event to celebrate the history of Grand Hotel.

Bob Tagatz, Resident Historian at Grand Hotel

Mr. Tagatz, named an Historic Hotels of America Historian of the Year, is a natural storyteller.  He will intrigue you with information about the hotel’s history and how the Island and the hotel came to be what they are today.

2021 History Weekend Theme:

Movies on Mackinac

Beautiful Mackinac has long been a destination for rejuvenatoin and inspiration. It has also been the location for a number of movies, both large and small. Two of the more significant films, “This Time for Keeps” and “Somewhere in Time” were filmed in and around Grand Hotel. In this lecture you will learn about why Mackinac Island was chosen, about the actual filming process and some anecdotal stories about the actors. We will talk about how the majestic Grand Hotel was not just a back drop, but an actual character in the romantic movie “Somewhere in Time.” When these films were released, no one could have predicted the long lasting impact they would have on Mackinac Island and in the hearts of their die hard fans.
