Watch the Magic Behind the Grand Hotel Signature Geranium

Using time-honored techniques, superior craftsmanship, and the highest quality of materials, Kindel Furniture Company in Grand Rapids has been creating custom furniture pieces with Carleton Varney for Grand Hotel guest rooms for over 20 years. The most recognizable part of this furniture might be the signature geranium found on headboards, bureaus, armoires, desks and nightstands.

Grand Hotel signature geraniums can be found on many pieces of furniture in guest rooms.

Did you know these geraniums have been individually hand painted by one very talented person?

Meet Lilly of Kindel, the magic hand behind the beautifully painted geraniums on our furniture. Lilly has worked at Kindel for 20 years!

It takes Lilly an hour to paint each geranium and although they are very similar, each one is completely unique.

NEW for 2018: Exciting Renovations Take Place at Grand Hotel

Grand Hotel may look like she is in hibernation mode, but behind the scenes many staff members are hard at work. On the third floor, rooms 318 and 320 will be renovated into Named Rooms and  ready for guests to enjoy this spring. Construction is underway and we are excited to announce the renovation of these rooms.

Announcing two new Named Rooms: The Prentiss M. Brown Suite and the Lilac Suite

We’re excited to announce the themes of our newest additions to Grand Hotel’s unique collection of named rooms and suites. The Lilac Suite and the Prentiss M. Brown Suite will celebrate Mackinac Island’s Annual Lilac Festival and the U.S. Representative and Michigan Senator who was also a prominent figure in the history and construction of the iconic Mackinac Bridge. Of Grand Hotel’s 393 guest rooms, some of its most exceptional accommodations are the more than 40 Named Rooms. These unique guest rooms reflect the lives of several U.S. Presidents and First Ladies, various historical time periods, decorating styles, and prominent historical figures and events.

The Lilac Suite will be located on the third floor with picturesque views of the Straits of Mackinac and Grand Hotel Tea Garden which features many lilac trees. Grand Hotel Interior Designer, Carleton Varney, has imagined the suite in lilac hues with custom designed carpet, fabrics and furnishings. Guests will find themselves surrounded by a garden filled with lilacs and other Mackinac blooms. Mackinac Island is home to 130-year-old lilac trees, all 23 species, and some 400 varieties and thousands of individual plants. Lilac experts believe that most of the island’s earliest lilacs came via 19th century settlers emigrating to Mackinac from New England and remain this day as the flower of the island.

The Annual Lilac Festival begins the second Friday in June and is a 10 day festival held in honor of the flower. It concludes the third Sunday of June with a horse-drawn Lilac Parade in downtown Mackinac Island. The Prentiss M. Brown Suite will also be located on the third floor overlooking the Tea Garden, Straits of Mackinac and the Mackinac Bridge. The Prentiss M. Brown Suite is named after Prentiss Brown, a former United States Representative, and Michigan Senator who served as Chairman of the Mackinac Bridge Authority where he oversaw the construction of the Mackinac Bridge. Mr. Brown is also the grandfather to Marlee Brown, wife of Grand Hotel President, Dan Musser, III. Carleton Varney has styled the suite with a scholarly feeling, including a rolltop desk and a wing chair from Senator Brown’s library. Family and personal memorabilia and photographs along with custom carpeting containing Senator Brown’s signature will adorn the space celebrating this Michigan icon.
