    2016 Closing of Grand Hotel

We had beautiful fall weather for the last weekend.
Beautiful fall weather for closing weekend.

As the Grand Lady prepares to rest for another winter, 2016 proved to be another remarkable season. This past weekend guests traveled from 35 states, the District of Columbia, Canada, Sweden, England and Panama for the 26th Anniversary of Somewhere In Time weekend. Around 145,000 guests visited Grand Hotel this season traveling from states across the country as far as California, Texas, Arizona, Florida, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and New York. Not to mention all of our guests who visited all season long from right here in the State of Michigan and the surrounding Mid-West states to make it a record breaking season with only 2 rooms unoccupied in July, August, and September. We are thankful for the loyal guests who choose to spend their vacation with us every year.

This year was exciting with the addition of Sushi Grand which guests and Mackinac Island visitors loved. If you missed it this year next year will be even better. Sushi Grand

This year Chef, Mamerto Embestro made sure to treat guests to a variety of unique fresh options and was very creative in his presentations.

Yesterday marked the end of our 129th season with the ceremonial bell ringing by President Dan Musser, III.

The sound of the bell and a speech from Mr. Musser officially ends the season every year. As soon as the last guest checks out the preparations begin right away to get the hotel ready to welcome its first guest on Thursday, May 4th, 2017, the hotel’s 130th Anniversary season.

New in 2017: We will open in the spring with 393 rooms. The Cupola Suites project we started in 2014 will continue with the addition of 3 bedrooms and two parlors along the 4th floor of the east end of the hotel.

1 day after closing and staff has already started the Cupola Suite project.
1 day after closing and staff has already started the Cupola Suite project clearing out attic space where the new rooms will be built.

The additional suites will expand the current options available for families or those looking for extra space. Dormers will continue along the east end of the hotel bringing the architecture back to its original look in the late 1800’s.

The hotel will be taken back to it's original architecture when the Cupola Suites project is finished.

This winter the maintenance staff will finish renovating the Front Porch. Last winter they reconstructed the west end down a little past the front entrance and this winter they will finish the project reconstructing the east side and the Pontiac Room deck. The flooring of the porch will be removed down to the original wood structure and replaced with a green visqueen flooring to match the other side of the porch. In addition they will continue to renovate the large white pillars bases that line the Front Porch.

Garden preparations have already taken place. The grounds crew was busy planting 15,000 tulip bulbs and 5,000 daffodil bulbs before the first frost. Next spring we are looking forward to our perennial planting efforts with a special focus on the hillside of the Tea Garden. We are planning for a very naturalized area with the hope of promoting the butterfly migration path.

    Grand awards thanks to you!

This season Conde Nast Traveler named Grand Hotel a Top Midwest resort for the fourth consecutive year and One of the Most Beautiful Wedding Venues. Travel + Leisure has named the hotel among the 500 World’s Best Hotels, Best Hotel in Michigan, Best Resort in the Midwest, and Best Family Beach Hotel, and Trip Advisor inducted the hotel into their Certificate of Excellence Hall Of Fame, as well as awarding their 2016 Certificate of Excellence to Grand Hotel, four Grand Hotel restaurants and the Grand Luncheon Buffet. We cannot forget to mention the AAA Four Diamond Award for the 23rd consecutive year. We cannot do all of this without our guests and dedicated staff. We appreciate everyone who helped to make Grand Hotel notable in all of these ways.

Our 130th Anniversary season is definitely something to look forward to. While you were visiting this season you may have noticed a video crew inside the hotel or on the grounds filming.
