As the Grand Lady sets to rest for another year, 2015 was one of the best yet. 284 days long, the longest yet with mild temperatures through September and guests creating experiences from all over the world it was sure to be Grand. At 9:30 a.m. today marked the end to the 129th season with the ceremonial ringing of the bell signifying the end of the season with Dan Musser, III, President Grand Hotel.
For the first time in history guests gathered this past weekend for Halloween Weekend. With a haunted trail, pumpkin carving contest, Haunted Tea, and a Halloween Ball it was sure to be one our best parties yet.
Yesterday, guests joined us for Close the Grand and helped with the tradition of moving rocking chairs from the Front Porch into the Terrace Room where they are stored for the winter, catching glimpses of unoccupied rooms, and enjoyed a laid back atmosphere as staff prepared the hotel for it’s winter rest.
This season Grand Hotel was named Best Historic Resort by Historic Hotels of America and one of the Top Midwest Resorts by Conde Nast Traveler, a Top 500 family destination by Travel + Leisure magazine, and Hall of Fame recognition by Trip Advisor for receiving the Certificate of Excellence for 5 years in a row. We cannot do all of this without our guests and dedicated staff. We appreciate everyone who helped to make Grand Hotel notable in all of these ways.
We also had multiple celebrity guests, which always makes it fun. A few included Betsy Brandt from Breaking Bad, Justin Verlander from the Detroit Tigers and girlfriend, Kate Upton, Dita Von Teese, and five Republican Presidential candidates, Jeb Bush, Carly Fiorina, Ted Cruz, John Kasich, and Marco Rubio. We also had the pleasure of hosting the granddaughter of George Steinbrenner’s who was married in the Grand Hotel Tea Garden. Most recently Jane Seymour visited for the 25th anniversary weekend of Somewhere in Time and the 35th Anniversary of the movie released in 1980. We were honored to have Ms. Seymour join us for such a momentous occasion.
2015 marked the addition of the Cupola Suites on the 4th floor of the hotel finishing the dormers across the front of the hotel from the Cupola Bar to the west end bringing that section of the roof line back to the hotel’s original architecture from the early 1800’s. The stone wall built in the Tea Garden was a design inspiration by Mimi Cunningham, Grand Hotel’s Vice President. Everyone enjoyed the addition of FootGolf on the front 9 holes of The Jewel and Pickle Ball on the tennis courts.
2016 will bring many more updates that include another small addition on the 4th floor. We will add a connecting parlor to room 484 with a dormer on the east end beginning the future addition of dormers beginning at the Cupola bar to the east end of the hotel. 14 bathrooms will be renovated and the famous front porch will be replaced from the entrance to the west end towards the Mackinac Bridge. One of our most exciting things to announce is the addition of a Sushi restaurant, Sushi Grand located next to The Gate House. Stay in touch this winter via social media and eclub for updates.
Thank you for being our guest and making the 129th season one of the most successful yet. We hope to see you again next year and if you haven’t made a trip to Mackinac Island we hope to create the grand experience for you soon.
