Opened in 1887, Grand Hotel is the world’s largest summer hotel. With 385 rooms, it is a member of Historic Hotels of America, is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites, and holds countless other distinctions for its time-honored hospitality.

The esteemed property is known for many things – such as having the “world’s largest front porch” (at 660 feet), its multitude of geraniums (2,500 plants in flower boxes on the front porch alone, with more than 5,200 total plants around the property) and its pecan ball dessert (with more than 50,000 served to hotel guests each season).

Crafted with creamy Hudsonville vanilla ice cream, swirls of genuine Grand Hotel fudge and premium pecan pieces, Grand Hotel Pecan Ball ice cream is a nod to the hotel’s signature dessert. Find Grand Hotel Pecan Ball at your local grocer, or even better yet, enjoy it on Mackinac Island with a visit to Sadie’s Ice Cream Parlor at Grand Hotel.

Sadie’s exclusively features 24 Hudsonville Ice Cream flavors including Grand Hotel Pecan Ball, which are served up in dishes, cones, shakes and sundaes. Those looking to share a traditional ice cream experience will enjoy the Grand Sundae. With eight scoops, it is proudly served in a dog bone shaped bowl, and is a crowd pleaser.

Sadie’s is the classic American ice cream parlor – with its white marble topped café tables and twisted iron chairs – was decorated by none other than the hotel’s noted interior designer Carleton Varney of Dorothy Draper & Company in New York. Outside, visitors can sit on benches designed of the same twisted iron, with aqua blue oval backs and 3D ice cream cones painted in the Neapolitan colors of chocolate brown, vanilla and pink.

Located outside the hotel’s east entrance, off of Cadotte Avenue, the parlor is open to all Mackinac Island visitors with no hotel admission fee.

“We are extremely excited to continue our partnership with Grand Hotel in 2015. Their team has been amazing to work with, and the partnership fits so naturally – summer, family and relaxation,” says CJ Ellens from Hudsonville Ice Cream. “A visit to Grand Hotel is an incredible experience and we are so excited to bring a scoop of that experience into families’ homes. This is an ice cream flavor that can only be matched by your own visit to Grand Hotel and Sadie’s Ice Cream Parlor!”

Ann Loveless_Headshot
Ann Loveless

Today’s guest blogger is Ann Loveless, alumna (’82) of Michigan State University’s College of Arts & Letters. Ann is a unique quilt artist who captures the beauty of Northern Michigan in her work and was celebrated as the 2013 Art Prize Winner. Ann will be sharing a presentation titled “Landscape Art Quilts” at MSU College of Arts & Letters 21st annual Arts Weekend (June 26-28).

Ann Loveless_Autumn 1

I find inspiration for my art quilts from nature and my love of textiles and sewing. I work from Northern Michigan photographs to create realistic art quilts. During my presentation, “Landscape Art Quilts”, I will highlight on three unique quilting styles and processes.  I am looking forward to sharing my thoughts and experience on how I have successfully marketed my art work, as well as my journey leading up to winning Art Prize in 2013. That monumental event has certainly propelled my art career and allowed me to write a book entitled, “Landscape Art Quilts” which covers my “collage” quilting technique.  I have also completed numerous commission art quilts, including a seven-foot piece for the Michigan State University Secchia Center medical building in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I am excited to connect with so many art lovers, MSU alumni, and guests of Grand Hotel at this year’s annual MSU Arts Weekend. What better backdrop for a weekend celebrating the arts than Mackinac Island and Grand Hotel. Hope to see you there!

Ann and her husband Steve Loveless own State of the Art Framing and Gallery in Beulah, Michigan. Steve is a landscape photographer and both Ann and Steve display and sell their work at the gallery. Ann will have art work on display and for purchase at Grand Hotel for Arts Weekend. She will also save time at the end of her presentation for questions.

Welcome to our 129th Season at Grand Hotel

Beautiful Night

My family and I, along with close to 700 staff members welcome you to our 129th Season at Grand Hotel. This winter we were busy continuing our Cupola Suites project on the fourth floor of the hotel. You might remember, last year we added the Musser Suite in honor of my father on the far west end of the fourth floor. Soon after we closed last November, we began raising the roof, adding four bedrooms and two parlors that stretch between the Musser Suite on the far west end of the hotel and the Cupola Bar in the center of the hotel. The suites are very flexible in configuration with entrances into the king bedded rooms through a lovely parlor creating a spacious one-bedroom suite with the ability to connect to a room with two queen beds to create a two-bedroom suite. The parlors feature a sleeper sofa, wet bar and large seating area. The rooms are decorated by our longtime interior designer Carleton Varney of Dorothy Draper & Company in New York. All of the guest rooms and parlors feature dormers for additional seating and beautiful views of the Straits of Mackinac. Once the project is complete, it will bring the hotel back to the way it looked as late as 1915 with dormers stretching across the roofline. The slight difference is that those dormers were on the third floor of the hotel while these will be one level higher.

Getting Ready
Getting Ready

As you look down to our Tea Garden from the Front Porch, you will notice beautiful stone work and new sculpted walls defining our flower beds.  Our friends at Windberg Masonry Inc. worked through the winter to make sure the project was complete in time for spring planting to make these gardens look better than ever.  The project was the inspiration of my sister, Mimi Cunningham, who had the vision and has worked with Dr. Bob Schutzki from Michigan State University for what will be a wonderful addition to Grand Hotel.

In addition to the various packages we are bringing back, we are excited about two new offerings for the upcoming season.  Carleton Varney and his colleagues will be bringing the popular Dorothy Draper School of Decorating to Grand Hotel the weekend of June 12-14.  They have done the event at a number halloween logo finalof wonderful locations across the country and we look forward to Carleton being with us that weekend to share his wisdom and flair that guests can take home and apply to their own homes.  Also, Grand Hotel will be open for Halloween weekend.  Our staff is putting together a thrilling weekend of events October 30 – November 1 for our guests to enjoy.  It is a rare occasion that Grand Hotel is open this late in the season and we look forward to offering guests a unique opportunity to experience Mackinac Island in late fall with a fun filled weekend of events.

Last but not least, we can’t forget about everyone’s favorite treat…ice cream! We are pleased that our ice cream partner, Hudsonville Ice Cream, will again produce a special seasonal flavor called Grand Hotel Pecan Ball. The ice cream flavor was created to honor our famous Grand Pecan Ball dessert served at all Grand Hotel restaurants for the last 60 years. Hudsonville produced twice the amount this year, so look for it in grocery stores and Sadie’s Ice Cream Parlor from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

My family and I appreciate your friendship and support and we look forward to seeing you on Mackinac during our upcoming 2015 season.

Most sincerely,

Dan Musser III
