Presenting Michael Feinstein Friday evening for the opening performance!

Friday Evening performance by Michael Feinstein

Michael Feinstein has built a dazzling career over the last three decades bringing the music of the Great American songbook to the world. A captivating performer, composer and arranger of his own original music, Feinstein’s recordings have earned him five Grammy nominations, as well as an Emmy nomination for his PBS-TV specials. The recipient of three honorary doctorates, Feinstein has appeared at such iconic venues as the White House, Buckingham Palace, Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall, and the Sydney Opera House. He also has become an unparalleled interpreter of music legends such as Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Johnny Mercer, and Duke Ellington. As well, he has designed a piano for Steinway called “The First Ladies,” inspired by the White House piano and signed by several former First Ladies. It was first played to commemorate the Ronald Reagan centennial on February 6, 2011. We are honored to have Michael Feinstein at this year’s Grand Hotel Labor Day Jazz Festival, where he will play Friday evening in the Theatre.

Saturday performances by Cherry Poppin’ Daddies and Jane Monheit

Saturday afternoon get ready for Cherry Poppin’ Daddies! Cherry Poppin’ Daddies will play a set featuring their latest release, a tribute to the Rat Pack. This music group brings energy, style, flare, and song choices that all guests will find entertaining.  With 25 years of performing with a style for swing music and the great American Songbook there is something for everyone. “We’re really fascinated by that mid century American can-do attitude,” says Steve Perry, the bands longtime leader and song writer.  It’s in that singular spirit, a combination of attitude, affability, and desire to go all in– that’s made the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies interesting as well.

Saturday evening sit back and relax with the jazz and cabaret sounds of grammy nominated Portuguese vocalist, Jane Monheit in the Grand Hotel Theatre.  Jane MonheitJane has a distinguished presence in both the jazz and cabaret worlds of music. After thirteen years of touring and ample experience in the music industry she has established herself and discovering her identity as an artist, Jane focuses on lyrical meaning. “Everything I’m singing now is a reflection of my truest self,” says Jane Monheit. “After all this time in the industry, after touring for 13 years, it’s time to just be me, with complete and utter freedom.” As a woman, wife, and mother, in her second decade of performing Jane embraces the emotional appeal of her personal life in her lyrics and performances. Her music is truly remarkable and will leave you behind with an unforgettable impression of great sound and meaning.

Sunday performances by The Empowerment Church and Bob James

On Sunday morning we are excited to welcome back The Empowerment Church who will perform on the Front Porch. The Empowerment Church, “A Church for All People”, has its home in Southfield, MI. Singing traditional hymns and African-American spirituals under the direction of Rev. Cheryl Sangster with keyboard accompaniment, the Women’s Choir is part of the Church’s music ministry. Spiritual Leadership features Rev. Dr. Carlyle Stewart III, and the Church’s Musical Director is Mr. John E. Lawrence.

Bob James

Sunday afternoon head down to the Grand Hotel Tea Garden to listen to Bob James. Discovered by Quincy Jones at the Notre Dame Jazz Festival in 1963, James recorded his first solo album, Bold Conceptions, that year for Mercury Records. He honed his skills working with Creed Taylor, working on albums for artists like Hank Crawford, Grover Washington, Jr, among others. James found great popular success overseeing significant hits for Paul Simon, Neil Diamond, Maynard Ferguson, and Kenny Loggins. In 1974, James recorded his own album, One, which launched a lifelong career of recording and performing live. After three more albums, James began his own label, Tappan Zee Records. It was during this time that he recorded his own gold seller, Touchdown, which included his composition, “Angela”, the instrumental theme from the sitcom Taxi, and possibly James’ best known work. Bob composed all the original music used in that television series for its entire run. During this time, James set the standard for the smooth jazz sound in the late 1970s and has continued with 58 albums and innumerable awards to follow through five decades. We are honored to have Bob come play for our guests.
